PROGRAM NOTE

Theatrics (2015) is a virtuosic showpiece for the solo percussionist. The title refers not only to the bold, theatrical energy displayed by the performer, but also to the drama that emerges from the exploration of various timbres. For instance, slight alterations of mallet placement on the drumheads create surprisingly dramatic shifts in mood and color. Similarly, the use of different mallets and sticking patterns establishes additional layers in the musical narrative.
